Setup Tolgee MCP Server

To set up the Tolgee MCP server, add an HTTP MCP entry to your AI client's configuration pointing at https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer (or your self-hosted Tolgee URL). Then authenticate. The easiest way is to sign in with your Tolgee account in the browser. The other way is a Tolgee Project API Key (PAK) or Personal Access Token (PAT) in the X-API-Key header. This page covers both, with config snippets for Claude Code, VS Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and any other MCP-compatible client, plus how to verify the connection works.

Prerequisites

  • A Tolgee account (cloud or self-hosted).
  • An MCP-compatible AI client.
  • For the API key way only: a Project API key (PAK) or a Personal Access Token (PAT), see API keys and PAT tokens.

How do I sign in with my Tolgee account?

In your AI client, add the Tolgee MCP server at https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer. When the client first calls a Tolgee tool, Tolgee answers that a sign-in is needed, and the client opens your browser. You log in to Tolgee, choose a project and the permissions, and click Allow. The client stores a short-lived token and renews it on its own. No key is copied anywhere.

Sign in with Tolgee (OAuth) explains the consent screen in detail. Two things matter for MCP:

  • Pick "A single project" if you work on one project. Project tools then run against it, and you do not have to name the project in every prompt. Pick All projects if you switch between projects. Then mention the project in your prompt, or ask the assistant to use a specific project ID.
  • Your AI client shows up as an unverified app. This is expected. Tolgee has no list of AI clients, so it reads the client's own description and shows its name and web address. Only continue if you started the sign-in from your own client.

For self-hosted instances, replace https://app.tolgee.io with your own Tolgee server URL.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http tolgee https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code, or claude mcp login tolgee in your terminal, and follow the steps in the browser. Claude Code 2.1.81 or newer is needed. Older versions report that the server does not support dynamic client registration.

VS Code

Add the server to your mcp.json:

{
"servers": {
"tolgee": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer"
}
}
}

VS Code asks you to sign in the first time it starts the server.

Other clients

Any client that supports MCP authorization with Client ID Metadata Documents works the same way: add the server without a header and sign in when asked. If your client only supports dynamic client registration, or asks you for a client ID and secret, use an API key instead. Tolgee does not offer dynamic client registration.

Tools that need a Personal Access Token

A sign-in is tied to the project or projects you approved. Tools that work above the project level, such as list_projects and create_project, are refused for a signed-in client with the error oauth_access_not_allowed. This is the case even if you picked All projects: a sign-in only carries project permissions, never a role in an organization. If you need these tools, connect with a PAT instead. Everything else, from listing keys to batch machine translation, works with a sign-in.

How do I connect with an API key?

Use an API key when your client cannot sign in, when you need the project-level tools above, or for a shared or automated setup.

Claude Desktop / Claude Code

To connect Tolgee to Claude Desktop, add the Tolgee MCP server to your claude_desktop_config.json using the HTTP transport, then restart Claude Desktop. Authentication uses your Tolgee Project API Key (PAK) or Personal Access Token (PAT), passed in the X-API-Key header. The server URL is https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer for Tolgee Cloud.

{
"mcpServers": {
"tolgee": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer",
"headers": {
"X-API-Key": "<your_PAK_or_PAT>"
}
}
}
}

If you use Claude Code, add the same server with one command:

claude mcp add --transport http tolgee https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer \
--header "X-API-Key: <your_PAK_or_PAT>"

Cursor

Open Settings > MCP and add a new server with the HTTP transport pointing to https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer. Pass your token via the X-API-Key header. After saving, Cursor shows a green "connected" indicator next to the Tolgee server in the MCP settings panel.

If you prefer file-based config, add this block to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
"mcpServers": {
"tolgee": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.tolgee.io/mcp/developer",
"headers": {
"X-API-Key": "<your_PAK_or_PAT>"
}
}
}
}

Which key should I use?

With a key, the Tolgee MCP server authenticates via the X-API-Key HTTP header on every request, using either a Tolgee Project API Key (PAK) or a Personal Access Token (PAT). A PAK is scoped to a single project and avoids passing projectId on every call; a PAT inherits your full user permissions across every project you can access. Use a PAK for day-to-day work on one project; use a PAT when you need to switch projects or call global tools like list_projects or create_project.

See API keys and PAT tokens for how to create and manage each token type.

Some tools are restricted to one token type. If you use the wrong one, the Tolgee MCP server returns PAK_ACCESS_NOT_ALLOWED or PAT_ACCESS_NOT_ALLOWED. Switch tokens and retry.

How do I verify the connection?

After configuring your client, try a read-only command to confirm everything works:

You: List my Tolgee projects

If the connection is successful, the AI assistant will return a list of projects accessible with your token.

If it returns an error, double-check that the API key is valid and has access to at least one project. For a sign-in, check that you approved a project the account can reach.

How do I troubleshoot the Tolgee MCP server?

Most Tolgee MCP server problems fall into a few buckets: bad credentials, wrong credential type, missing permissions, or the AI client not actually reaching the server. Start every diagnosis by asking your AI assistant "List my Tolgee projects". This calls a read-only global tool and surfaces auth and connection problems without changing any data. The error returned tells you which layer failed.

For non-MCP-specific issues (rate limits, read-only mode, EE features, self-hosted unreachable, etc.) see the platform FAQs.

Can I use the Tolgee MCP server with self-hosted Tolgee?

Yes, the Tolgee MCP server is built into the Tolgee platform itself, so every self-hosted Tolgee instance exposes it automatically at /mcp/developer. To connect, replace the Tolgee Cloud URL in your MCP client config with your own server's base URL. There is no extra deployment, your self-hosted instance just needs to be reachable from wherever your AI client runs.

Signing in with a Tolgee account works on self-hosted too, as long as tolgee.back-end-url (or front-end-url on a single-origin setup) is set and tolgee.oauth2.cimd-enabled was not turned off. Sign-in for apps (OAuth) has the details for the operator.

 {

"tolgee": {
"type": "http",

+ "url": "https://tolgee.your-company.com/mcp/developer",
"headers": {
"X-API-Key": "<your_PAK_or_PAT>"
}
}
}
}

Requirements for self-hosted:

  • A Tolgee version that includes the MCP server (check the changelog).
  • HTTP(S) reachable from the network your AI client runs in. Local Tolgee on http://localhost:8200 works for desktop clients on the same machine; remote clients require a public HTTPS endpoint.
  • Redis recommended for production. MCP session state is persisted to Redis when configured. Without Redis, sessions live only in the JVM memory of the node that handled the handshake. Load-balanced deployments without Redis will lose sessions on subsequent requests.
